We're Getting Closer To Making Major Changes To The Chicago Police Department

Over the past few years we have worked hard to hold the Chicago Police Department accountable for their history of racism and abuse aimed primarily at the Black community and other communities of color. Our two main goals have been to get community control over CPD and negotiate a new police union contract that allows officers to be held accountable for misconduct.

Today we achieved a small victory when we were able to get a resolution introduced in the Chicago City Council demanding that the Mayor negotiate a new police union contract that removes provisions that have fostered racist misconduct and led to a lack of accountability for officers within CPD. The resolution was signed by all 18 members of the City Council's Black Caucus, who have vowed not to vote for a new contract that doesn't include the provisions we helped develop with leaders from across the city.

Our work is far from over, but we're getting closer. With the Black Caucus on board, along with several other Aldermen that have pledged their support, we are only a few votes short of being able to block any new FOP contract that doesn't have our provisions in it. Both the U.S. Department of Justice and the mayoral-appointed Police Accountability Task Force recommended reforming police union contracts as a key component to improving police accountability.
