Our Governor Has Hit A New Low

In November 2014, the people of Illinois elected Bruce Rauner to be our Governor. Since his first day in office he has conducted strategic and systematic attacks on immigrants, workers, seniors, and people of color. Governor Rauner has rescinded a previous executive order which prevented state police from cooperating with ICE. He tried to strip collective bargaining rights from public sector workers. He has attempted to change workers compensation laws to benefit rich corporations instead of injured workers. He has proposed a budget that would drastically cut funding to senior care. And despite a commitment to reduce the incarceration rate in Illinois, Governor Rauner recently vetoed legislation that would have decriminalized marijuana possession.

We thought the Governor couldn't get any more cruel, but we were wrong. Governor Rauner has made drastic cuts to the Child Care Assistance Program, or CCAP. CCAP provides much needed subsidies for childcare for low-income families in the State of Illinois. Any parent will tell you that having reliable access to quality childcare is a key component to family economic security. As a matter of fact, the Black working mothers we've surveyed over the past few months have said not having access to childcare is a major barrier for them in getting and keeping a good job; more so than education or criminalization.

Please join leaders from the Workers Center For Racial Justice in signing this petition to the Illinois State Legislature urging them to overturn Governor Rauner's cruel cuts to childcare.
