Governor Quinn Signs Ban The Box Legislation Into Law

This past Saturday, Governor Patrick Quinn of Illinois sign legislation that would require employers to remove the question asking about a person's criminal background from most job applications. The bill, also known as Ban the Box, is the culmination of nearly two-years of work for our organization. Click here to listen audio of WCRJ Executive Director DeAngelo Bester saying a few words at the press conference. More photos from the event can also be found on our Facebook Page.

As proud as we are of the work we did to help get this bill passed and signed into law, we know the work is far from over. Businesses may no longer be able to discriminate against formerly incarcerated workers at the very beginning of the hiring process, but we still need to develop more incentives for businesses to hire them. And of course we need to continue to fight to implement policies that will help lead to a reduction in the overall prison population.
